At DOT, we believe empathy drives action. Our Poverty Sensitisation Workshops are powerful advocacy tools designed to help individuals, organisations, and communities understand the lived realities of low-income families in Singapore.
DOT has conducted more than 20 runs of Living On The Edge since 2016. Since 2020, we've developed and conducted more than 50 runs of This Is My Experience — together impacting more than 2,000 participants. These workshops have been featured in CNA Lifestyle and CNA Today, and are recognised for sparking meaningful conversations among policymakers, corporates, community leaders, and the wider public.
By stepping into the shoes of those facing daily struggles, participants don't just learn about poverty. They feel its impact.
What you'll gain

Your participation doesn't stop at awareness. All workshops are conducted for a small donation, which goes directly to supporting lower-income women in their back-to-work journeys through DOT's Job Readiness Programmes. WORKSHOPS
Living On The Edge (LOTE)
3 hours · Experiential role-play in family units
LOTE is a dynamic, interactive workshop where participants experience the complex realities of multi-stressed, low-income families in Singapore. Based on real-life family profiles and local social policies, it gives participants an emotional and intellectual understanding of how poverty shapes everyday choices.
Participants are assigned personas representing family members — from children to elderly persons with disabilities — and navigate the challenges of limited resources and trade-offs together, in family units. Every decision reflects the balancing act of survival.
LOTE has been embraced by policymakers, social workers, corporate CSR teams, VWOs, grassroots leaders, and the general public as a safe but powerful space to challenge assumptions and spark empathy-driven change.
Min 32 / max 39 participants, supported by 30 booth volunteers and co-facilitators. Requires 2 rooms (one seating 45 with AV, one with 14 long tables and 20 chairs) and 5 flip charts.
This Is My Experience (TIME)
2–3 hours · In-person simulation with a single persona
TIME deepens participants' connection with the struggles of low-income families. Each participant takes on a single persona from the lower-income community, facing the stresses, barriers, and choices that define life at the margins — with decisions made under real time pressure.
Min 20 / max 50 participants. Requires 1 large room seating 50, with AV and high-speed wifi.
